About the Book

Striving for Quality begins with a practical question: why do some systems grow in quality while others slowly lose their coherence? Drawing on decades of software engineering, Jesse John Daniels follows that question beyond code into the structures of human life.

Through the lens of complex systems, the book examines the patterns that connect the world around us, our experience of being human, and Christian faith. Across thirteen chapters, it develops a connected account of quality and our place within God’s expanding creation, bringing an engineer’s perspective into conversation with theology, philosophy, science, and other ways of seeking truth.

From the Introduction

This book did not begin as an attempt to write about theology, philosophy, or culture. It began with two decades spent building complex software systems, some of which worked and some of which collapsed. Over those years, the responsibilities changed. I have worked as a developer, a technical lead, an architect, and an executive, moving across layers of responsibility while remaining inside the same underlying structures. As those roles changed, one thing became consistently clear. Success and failure had far less to do with intelligence or effort than with alignment.

What all of these experiences shared was a simple but unforgiving truth. Over time, systems either grow in quality or they decay. There is no neutral state. Consequences can be delayed, sometimes for years, but they cannot be avoided. Systems that neglect improving quality rarely fail all at once. They slowly lose coherence until even small changes become risky and exhausting.
